Young footballers off to Germany after fundraising success

18 young footballers from Frome Town United FC’s youth squad are heading for Frome’s twin town Murrhardt in Germany in July, having successfully reached their fundraising target for the trip. The players will take part in a mini European football tournament at Frome’s twin town Murrhardt in Germany from 5th to 7th July, timed to coincide with Euro 2024. They will play against teams from Frome’s other twin towns, Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne in France, and Rabka-Zdrój & Rötha in Poland, as well as Murrhardt, and will also have the opportunity to travel to Stuttgart Stadium and visit the fan zones/Euro Cup event areas within Stuttgart City Centre.

Fundraising activities included a bingo night at Badgers Hill and a challenge event that saw them climb Mount Snowdon. A bake sale is planned at Frome Tennis Club’s open day on Sunday 23rd June. They have already exceeded their £7,000 fundraising target to cover the cost of the trip.

Cllr Philip Campagna, who is due to travel with the team to Murrhardt, said ‘The young people have worked really hard to raise the money they needed to fund this trip and we hope they have a fantastic experience in July. Many thanks to everyone who donated to their fundraising page, sponsored them and supported them in any way. Particular thanks to Frome Twinning Association, who donated an amazing £900 towards the Murrhardt trip. ’

Lucas, who plays in the under 15s boys’ team, said ‘We are extremely lucky to have such an amazing opportunity to play football in Germany against teams from four other countries. We have all worked really hard fundraising to ensure we can get to Germany and I know we are all really excited. Thank you to everyone who has donated to make this trip possible for us all’

Sienna from the under 14 girls’ team said ‘In Frome we are so lucky to have such a large number of girls’ teams. For us to represent not only Frome Town United and Frome but also girls’ football within England is a great opportunity. We can’t wait for the tournament and the opportunity to play against girls’ teams from the other countries attending’
