It’s time to start thinking about elections to Somerset County Council and Frome Town Council which are due to be held on Thursday 5th May. These are important elections for Somerset with the creation of a new, unitary council in April 2023 – the first major change to the way the county is governed in almost 50 years.

For their first year, elected county councillors will take responsibility for all current County Council services and oversee the local government reorganisation to establish the new single unitary Somerset Council on 1st April 2023, where they will then serve as unitary councillors.

The town council elections on 5th May offer the chance for people to stand for their community at grass roots level. Anyone interested in standing as a candidate needs to complete the papers by 4pm Tuesday 5th April and hand deliver them between 9.30am and 4.30pm to: The Deputy Returning Officer, Mendip District Council, Cannards Grave Road, Shepton Mallet BA4 5BT. Further information and nomination packs are available on the Mendip website: https://www.mendip.gov.uk/article/10641/Elections-2022.

Residents must register before the deadline of Thursday 14th April in order to vote. You’ll need your national insurance number, your name, address and your date of birth. It’s easy and takes a few minutes, just visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

If you are unable to attend a polling station during election time or would rather vote by proxy or by post, you can apply to do so via the Mendip District Council’s website. The deadline for applications to vote by post is 5pm on Monday 19th April 2022. The deadline for applications to vote by proxy is 5pm Tuesday 26th April 2022.

Frome Town Council are organising a hustings at the Cheese & Grain on Sunday 1st may at 5pm where you’ll get a chance to meet the candidates, put your questions forward, listen to others and get involved. Register to attend at bit.ly/Hustings2022.
