Frome’s Community Fridge, located in the Market Yard carpark, is yet again famous nationwide having recently featured on an episode of BBC’s Escape to the Country. This festive season the team of 22 dedicated volunteers who run the fridge are entering their busiest time of year and will double their collections over the Christmas period.
Volunteer co-ordinator Terri Pitts said: “The Community Fridge is now saving over 30 tonnes of food a year from being thrown away, by collecting excess food from supermarkets, local shops and cafes. Individuals can donate too and the food from the Fridge is available to anyone, just turn up and see what’s available!”
So, if you buy too many mince pies or have a surplus of sprouts, you can support the Community Fridge over the festive holidays by donating any unopened food items or fresh items like fruit and vegetables.
The Community Fridge was set up as a community project with Edventure and Frome Town Council in 2016. Several shops around Frome already donate and more recently, Costa Coffee and the Co-op at Badcox have started to donate to the Community Fridge. And as the team are now collecting and distributing more food than ever before, the team could do with your support.
