Frome Medical Practice and Frome Town Council are inviting people in Frome to attend events celebrating International Women’s Day, which are aimed at advancing menstrual equity through the Plastic Free.Period. campaign.
Period poverty, stigma and lack of access to sustainable products are all barriers to menstrual equity. The Plastic Free. Period. campaign aims to ensure all menstruators have access to the information and products they need to support their menstrual health, without causing environmental and health harm.
Vic Yerbury, Practice Nurse, said, “This year we are accelerating action for menstrual equity in Frome! Did you know that your first period is called your menarche? It’s a big transition and we are here to support this important transition into menstruation, the plastic free way. We’re offering plastic free period packs, free of charge, to menstruating students aged 12 to 14 or a pair of period pants for those who haven’t claimed theirs yet.”
“Period pants offer greater comfort and are reusable, making them better for the environment. But there are often barriers, including the initial cost, to making the switch. This project is helping women and girls make informed decisions about their health, as conventional plastic products contain many harmful toxins and chemicals.”
There are two opportunities to meet the Plastic Free.Period. Team to find out more and claim your plastic free period packs. On Wednesday 5th March the team will be in the Westway Precinct between 11am and 4pm, where members of the public can get expert advice and see demo products. Students from Avanti Park School will also be hosting a book sale at this event to support the campaign. Later that day, from 3pm to 5pm, you can drop into Frome Medical Practice and explore plastic free period options with a member of staff at the Young Person’s Clinic, pick up a free pack and fabulous zine containing exclusive discount codes.
Vic added, “These events are ideal for anyone who is not sure where to start with reusable period products. Come along and learn how to care for them, find out what works best for you and get reliable health advice from trusted experts.”
Local Enviromenstrual Ambassador, Cecilia Allon, said, “This event is a vital step in breaking down barriers to menstrual equity, ensuring that all young menstruators in Frome have access to sustainable, safe, and stigma-free period products, empowering them to manage their periods with confidence and without disruption to their education.”
The Plastic Free.Period. campaign is part of Green & Healthy Frome, a partnership between Frome Medical Practice, Frome Town Council, and Edventure: Frome, funded by the National Lottery.
