Dog owners – have your say about new facilities at the Showfield

Frome’s dog owners are invited to comment on provisional designs for canine play equipment and fencing at Frome’s Old Showfield, on Sunday 8th September from 9am to 11am. There will also be a free dog ‘parkour’ and hoopers activity, run by Charismatic Pets, and a pop-up pet shop with natural treats and chews. Every dog who participates will receive a rosette from Charis and the team – participation matters more than aptitude for the purpose of this fun event!

People asked for a safe area to train and socialise their dogs, especially puppies and dogs that need some recall practice. There were also many requests for doggy exercise equipment to help keep dogs mentally stimulated and physically fit.

Cllr Sara Butler-Bartholomew said “The Old Showfield is already very popular with Frome’s dog walkers and the response was really positive when we asked if people would like to see a dedicated dog area. What that means in practice is up for debate. The team have researched similar dog areas and taken advice, and we’d love to know what you think of the ideas so far. Come and view the drawings and ideas and tell us what you think would work best for you and your dog.”

Charismatic Pets ran a similar and very busy event in April. The event is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if the temperature isn’t dog friendly; interested parties are advised to check Frome Town Council social media for updates. The event runs from 9am to 11am on Sunday 8th September, in the back field at the Old Showfield.

Take a look at the designs below and let us know what you think by Sunday 15th September by filling out the survey. We’ll also be joined by Charismatic Pets for a fun, free dog parkour and have-a-go-hoopers session at the Old Showfield on Sunday 8th September from 9am to 11am, where you can chat to us about the plans. Every dog who has a go at the course will receive a rosette for taking part.

You can also call us on 01373 465 757 or pop into Frome Town Hall to share your thoughts. If you are visually impaired or have any difficulty understanding the designs, please get in touch so we can help.

3rd September update

As part of the process of refining the design, we spoke to a dog agility expert. With this feedback in mind, we’ve made some changes to the proposed design, reflected on the PDF and image below. We’ve made some of the equipment lower and added non-slip surfaces, to ensure the equipment is at an introductory level and suitable for a wide variety of dogs and inexperienced owners. We’ve also removed a couple of elements, such as the weave poles, to reduce risk of injuries and improve the spacing between elements. If you’ve already filled in the survey but would like to respond to this update, feel free to submit a new response.
