Mendip District Council last week announced their decision to transfer the Boyle Cross to Frome Town Council.
The decision was unanimously endorsed by members of Mendip District Council’s Cabinet at their meeting on 6th July.
Leader of Mendip District Council, Cllr Ros Wyke, said: “Mendip is committed to protecting and enhancing our towns. We recognise there are some assets that should be administered locally and that it doesn’t make sense for Mendip to own them.
We are delighted to be able to return Boyle Cross to the residents of Frome. We know it is valued by those who live there and that people take great pride in it.”
Regarding the transfer, Anne Hills, Leader of the Council at Frome Town Council, said: “We welcome the opportunity to discuss with Mendip the transfer of the Boyle Cross and look forward to discussing the detail with them.
From our perspective we need to ensure that along with the responsibility of ownership and liability also comes the benefits of being able to have events of our choosing and the ability to generate an income stream.
As a result we will also be looking for a reduction of red tape around organising events. We look forward to negotiating these points and hopefully bringing this matter to a beneficial conclusion in the near future.”
