Mayor’s column – 31st July 2024

So here we go, into a six-week summer break for our schools, hoping for good weather and something to entertain the kids. There’s always plenty going on in Frome and the we’ve created a listing on the Discover Frome website to help you keep track of it, with activities to suit all tastes and budgets, including plenty of low cost and free options.

I went to the Children’s Festival on 21st July. There were so many ways to amuse and entertain the hordes of youngsters there; theatre, face-painting, zip wires and craft workshops, on both banks of the river. It’s always a fantastic and inclusive event, well organised by Purple Elephant, a local charity that works hard to help local families.

The following evening I was at the Cheese and Grain for ‘Later with Frome College ‘ enjoying a range of music and song from our upcoming young talent. The whole event is managed and produced by the students so it’s a great showcase for both performers and those with aspirations to other roles in the live performance world.

My work with Frome Town Council has been made even more interesting recently as we’ve been reviewing the initial findings from an online survey and a series of ‘pop-up’ engagement sessions, hearing what really matters to the people who live and work here. We’ll be sharing more information on that over the coming weeks. Thank you to everyone who has taken part, whether in person or online, to provide us with the information we need to act on your behalf.

Finishing on another positive, it’s great to welcome Sam Baker as she and her team reopen the Portway Post Office. What a valuable service they offer, please do give them your support as they start to build that back up to become a thriving business once more.
