Mayor’s column 29 September 2022

As The Mayor, Cllr Sara Butler, has taken a well-earned break, she has asked me to write the Mayor’s Column. This is my first and as Deputy Mayor, I am honoured to be given this opportunity. My family and I moved to Frome in 1986 and we were made to feel most welcome and are lucky to live in such a wonderful town.

One of my roles as Deputy Mayor is to support Sara and attend events and functions representing Frome Town Council and the people of Frome. I was pleased to be invited by The Lions of Frome to their recent Ride Kids Ride event at The Old Showfield. This was the third year of this very popular event which is open to our young residents in Frome. It was great to see children with their families, grandparents, friends and dogs complete laps of the Showfield on bikes and scooters.

As part of the Frome Town Council Football Project Group, we are working in partnership with Frome Town Football Club in order to secure a healthy future for the club. It is a pleasure to work with directors, supporters and coaches of all sections of the club and members of the wider community as we explore the option of community ownership. The commitment shown by so many for the club is really impressive. This club is a wonderful community asset and needs to remain so. On Monday 3rd October from 7-9pm, we are holding an open public meeting at The Clubhouse at Badgers Hill and all are welcome. Come and hear about our partnership with the club and what community ownership might look like. Bring your ideas, enthusiasm and expertise and be part of the future of the club.

Great Big Green Week was a big hit again this year with events as diverse as Cycle Sunday and Ready Steady Cook to the more strategic Climate Action Group which focussed on transport. Another great example of a community event where the town comes together was the annual carnival – what an amazing show and a testament to its fantastic volunteers.  I feel privileged to be part of such a vibrant and supportive community and I strive to do my best in my role as Councillor and Deputy Mayor. Look after each other and do not hesitate to contact me or other colleagues if there is anything you need.
