Mayor’s column 2 July 2020

We are now all beginning to see the start of the much-anticipated improvements works in town. The Market Place has been closed to through traffic and is now a much easier place to get around for pedestrians and cyclists, helping with the need to stay socially distanced and making it feel much safer to go shopping. It’s still easy to park in the town with all car parks, including both the Market Yard and Cork Street, still open and all Mendip car parks totally free until at least 4th August!

It’s so important that we support our local traders, keep shopping locally and spread the word to each other that apart from being able to drive straight through the town, very little has changed to impede the shopping experience, in fact free parking makes it even easier! Please let’s use this chance to all get behind our traders, support them well, and hopefully we’ll come out the other end with a town we can really be proud of! If you can’t get to town, then please remember you can order many local items online, including takeaways, and have them delivered to your door.

One of the big disappointments for me, due to the pandemic, is the necessary cancellation of the Frome Festival in July. By now I’d have ticked off all the events I intended to support and have bought many of the tickets. In order to survive and come back next year, they will definitely need our support. They’re planning some online events to keep us all interested and the first of these is happening on Tuesday evening, 30th June. It’s the Frome Festival Quiz which you can join via their Facebook page. It’s totally free although they are asking for donations if you possibly can.

We are also used to seeing the Frome Open Art Trail which is an annual celebration of local artists and makers which normally takes place alongside the Festival in July.  In order to continue to help local artists and makers, this year a Virtual Art Trail will take place instead from 4th – 12th July. Their website hosts an interactive brochure with all the details of the artists and their work, it would be wonderful if you could support them too https://www.frome-open-art-trail.co.uk/

I’ll sign off by wishing you a good week. Please keep shopping locally and remember to keep passing the word about all the free car parks in town. Have fun shopping!
