Over the past few weeks residents of Frome and beyond have been signing up for Cheap Street Charity SOS Africa’s latest fundraising challenge: A Sponsored Firewalk Fundraiser at Frome College.
Taking place on Saturday 12 November between 6pm and 9pm, up to 100 brave Firewalkers are fundraising to enable SOS Africa to build a new classroom which will provide vital educational support to underprivileged children in South Africa.
The charity, founded by Frome residents, is delighted to announce that both Frome Mayor Toby Eliot and local MP David Warburton are among the many who have already signed up to the challenge.
Cllr Eliot, who is also raising funds for local charity Fair Frome recognises the importance of supporting the work carried out by grassroots organisations: “The Firewalk will be something entirely new for me and I don’t mind admitting I’m a little apprehensive. However, I hope that, as well as creating an unusual spectacle in Frome (and possibly some singed feet), we’ll raise the profile of these two locally run charities and the important work they do both in the town and in some of the most poverty stricken parts of the world.”
David Warburton MP, who last year spent 24 hours in Shepton Mallet Prison as part of the charity’s “Nominate an Inmate” 24 Hour Charity Lock-In is an experienced firewalker having completed the challenge once before in 2014.
SOS Africa Founder Matt Crowcombe will be first to take on the challenge: “We are extremely grateful for the fantastic support provided by Mayor Toby, David Warburton MP, Frome FM, Frome College and the local community. There are still a limited number of Firewalking spaces available if you wish to join us on what promises to be special night for the charity! And if the Firewalking isn’t entertainment enough, we will have music courtesy of Frome FM, a Hog Roast, Fire Juggler and Frome Fire Station has even offered to bring an engine to put out the coals at the end of the evening!”
