Local arts organisation Terrestrial, known for creating playful projects with community groups across the region, are filling the library with free activities through the coldest weeks of the year.
From now until 15th February there will be games and creative tasks on offer every day, free hot drinks, and special events including storytelling, illustration and songwriting clubs for young people, and art and movement workshops for adults. There will also be lunchtime concerts, daily quizzes and craft sessions.
Frome Library is already an official ‘Warm Space’ for anyone looking to keep warm this winter, but Terrestrial have secured a grant from Somerset Community Foundation’s ‘Help Through Winter’ fund to provide extra events and activities to make the library more welcoming.
Terrestrial’s Director Tom Spencer says: ‘We love working in libraries. Anyone can come in and explore without spending any money, and there are always interesting people to talk to. We’re thrilled to have this chance to programme an exciting range of events to make Frome Library feel extra special for a few weeks.”
“Our work is about encouraging people to feel like artists”, Tom continues. “We think something magical happens when you try something new and creative – whatever age you are. So we hope people will come and pick up a paintbrush, or write one line of a poem, or try to solve one of Jess’ famously difficult quiz questions.”
Terrestrial particularly want to appeal to families with older children, as libraries have reported many young people stop visiting libraries around age 8. So they’ve programmed several weekly workshops, such as ‘Story Inventors’ and ‘Young Illustrators’, specifically for 8-13 year olds.
All events are free to attend, and the full programme is available at www.terrestrial.org.uk.
