Staff from the local branch of B&Q recently helped with a revamp of the Mount Community Garden. The garden adjoins the Key Centre on Feltham Lane, a former Sure Start centre owned by Somerset Council, which is currently used by community groups including Fair Frome, Young Somerset and Purple Elephant.
B&Q supports charities and voluntary organisations across the UK through its charitable arm, B&Q Foundation, through grants and donations, and through ‘community days’ where staff take a break from their day job to work in communities. The B&Q team took on a range of tasks including tidying, weeding and power washing the Key Centre building itself, making the space easier and more pleasant to use for the various groups who hire the space. They were assisted by FTC Engagement Officer Liz Stone, Cllr Anne Hills and Lenka Grimes of Fair Frome.
Cllr Anne Hills said “Wow – who knew the Key Centre could sparkle like that! Thanks to the team from B&Q Foundation and everyone who came along to help for tidying this small but perfectly formed green space. The Key Centre is the home of Food at Five on Mondays, where anyone can come to share a hot nutritious meal and good company, and its facilities are used by various other groups. We’d like to see this valuable community space used more, and improving its ‘kerb appeal’ is a step in the right direction!’
