Act to adapt: practical action in a changing climate

Riverside walk and talk event, March 2025 – discussing the link between healthy humans and a healthy planet (Owen King)

On Tuesday 13th of May from 7pm to 9pm, people in Frome will gather at Frome Town Hall to discuss how climate change is affecting our lives and what we should do to ensure we can keep thriving in the face of a changing world.

Somerset is experiencing increased risks from sea level rise and unpredictable weather patterns that lead to flooding, drought and wildfires.

How do we adapt to these changes?

Frome Town Council has partnered with Somerset Wildlife Trust for Act to Adapt, the first in a series of events that will culminate later in the year with the launch of a Climate Adaptation Plan for our community. Frome’s Act to Adapt project follows similar collaborations in Glastonbury and The Poldens and like those projects, is funded by Somerset Rivers Authority (SRA).

Natalie Barnett – Climate Adaptation Officer at Somerset Wildlife Trust said –

“Climate adaptation isn’t just smart planning, it’s about creating places where both people and wildlife can thrive together. Whether it’s planting trees that cool our streets or creating wetlands that absorb floodwater, these solutions protect us while giving nature a fighting chance.

The beauty is in the ripple effects: cleaner air, more wildlife, and communities coming together around shared green spaces. Our wellbeing is deeply connected to the natural world, and by adapting with nature, we’re securing a future that works for everyone.”

Globally, greenhouse gas emissions are still on the rise. This means that the climate will continue to change around us. The world is going to keep getting hotter for many years to come and this has very real impacts on the way we live in Frome.

Matt Mellen – Climate Action Lead at Frome Town Council said –

“We know that our winters are getting wetter and our summers are getting hotter. This means investing now in better flood defences and more shady areas is important. What else should we be doing?

In a time of extreme weather events strong community connections and knowing our neighbours may be just as important as a survival pack and a good store of tinned food. Please come and join us as we think through how best to prepare our town.”

Everyone is welcome! Please join in to discuss how Frome can adapt to local climate impacts. Free tea and cake will be provided.”
