A new location for Frome’s skatepark?

Frome Town Council (FTC) will be popping alongside Frome Skatepark Project’s Skate Jam event on Saturday 10th May between 10am and 4pm, inviting park users to comment on plans for a potential new location for the skatepark. Anyone not able to attend the in-person event is invited to share their views on the plans via the FTC website, at the link at the foot of this article.

Frome Skatepark Project have been fundraising and campaigning for a new skatepark for Frome since 2018. A co-hosted skate jam event in September 2024 indicated support for updates to the existing skatepark, as part of a broader conversation about Victoria Park and the Mary Baily field.

Cllr Mark Dorrington said “Last year’s engagement about Victoria Park and the Mary Baily playing field gave councillors lots to think about as regards the future of these much-loved and well used open spaces. Many thanks to everyone who completed the survey or stopped to chat to us. Everything you told us has been collated and will feed into planning for future improvements and to preserve the elements people already love.

“This time, we’re asking you specifically about the skatepark in Mary Baily. It’s badly in need of a refurb, and we are supporting the group by gauging your opinion on a possible new location. The skatepark is very close to residential properties and it wouldn’t get planning permission to be where it is. As such, any refurb plans offer a once-in-a-generation opportunity to relocate the skate park and unify it with the existing play offer.

“The overwhelming consensus last year was that the centre of the grounds should be kept clear, for play, recreation and not least for the air ambulance. The latest proposal, which you can see on plans on 10th May and on the FTC website, is to move the skatepark further into the park, but keeping that central area clear, with the skatepark alongside the existing play areas.”
