Smoothies, litter picks and a flash mob! Big Walk and Wheel 2025

Avanti Park pupils at a Big Walk and Wheel ‘walking bus’

The Big Walk and Wheel, a UK-wide active travel campaign, is coming to Frome between 24th March and 4th April. Schools including Trinity First School, Hayesdown First School, St John’s First School and Avanti Park School will enjoy activities including visits from ‘Dr Bike’ for cycle maintenance, making pedal-powered smoothies, walking buses and litter picks.

This year’s campaign in Frome culminates in a no-rehearsal-required ‘flash mob’ event on the bandstand in Victoria Park, led by local performer Cheryl Sprinkler of Mojo Moves. All are welcome to come to the park to dance with Cheryl between 3.20pm and 4pm on Friday 4th April.

Hosted by active travel charity Sustrans, the Big Walk and Wheel encourages schools and pupils to engage in active travel to school, on foot or on wheels. Participating schools can win daily prizes if 15% or more of their pupils travel actively to school.

Cllr Philip Campagna said “We’re looking forward to another ‘Big Walk and Wheel’ in Frome – last year’s event was fantastic and the team at FTC have another busy calendar planned in 2025 to get young people active. All we need now is some Spring sunshine, (surely it has to arrive sometime!).

“The ever-popular ‘smoothie bike’ will be visiting various schools, offering children the chance to blend their own delicious smoothies using a pedal-powered blender mounted on the back of the bike. If your bike has come out of the garage looking a little unloved, why not book an appointment with Dr Bike and get it spruced up? It’s not just about bikes…lots of local schools will have the chance to start their school day right with some disco moves, led by Cheryl Sprinkler of Mojo Moves. And if you’re wishing you were still at school to join in the fun, you can still get involved! Come along to Victoria Park bandstand on Friday 4th April at 3.20pm to celebrate a Big Walk and Wheel fortnight well spent with a ‘flash mob’ dance event with Mojo Moves – let’s see how many people we can get together!”

Big Walk and Wheel is the UK’s largest inter-school walking, wheeling, scooting, and cycling challenge. It inspires pupils to make active journeys to school, improve air quality in their neighbourhood and discover how these changes benefit their world.
