Pay it forward at the DonateIT tech amnesty

Kyle and Simon (DonateIT), Linda (Fixy), Will (DonateIT) and Cllr Anne Hills at the January 2024 amnesty

Local charity DonateIT is back at Frome Town Hall on Sunday 2nd February 2025 between 10am and 1pm, collecting donations of unwanted smartphones, laptops, consoles and other digital devices. Donated devices are securely wiped of all personal data and redistributed to people who need them.

DonateIT founder Simon Barfoot said “Saving unwanted devices from landfill is a good idea in itself, but when you pass on a device to us, we make sure it gets to where it’s needed. We work with the isolated, elderly, people in rehab, domestic violence charities, displaced people: anyone struggling to have a good quality of life because they can’t get connected.”

“One example of the difference a donated device can make is with children who have Type 1 diabetes, using a smartphone handed in to DonateIT to monitor the child’s implant. Previously, parents might have to prick the child’s finger multiple times a day to check levels. Suddenly the nurses at the hospital can see live data from the child, even while they’re sleeping, and give them a tiny top-up of insulin if they need it. This is a phone that’s worth 50 or 60 quid, destined for landfill. It really can be life changing.”

Cllr Anne Hills, said “We’re looking forward to hosting DonateIT and supporting their brilliant work again. It’s great to have Fixy on hand again too, who are a goldmine of advice when it comes to reusing and repurposing electrical items of all kinds. Join us on Sunday 2nd February and again on Sunday 8th June, during Great Big Green Week, clearing clutter, saving items from landfill – and just maybe changing a life.”

The DonateIT tech amnesty takes place in the car park at Frome Town Hall, on Park Road, BA11 1EU, on Sunday 2nd February between 10am and 1pm. In the case of wet weather the amnesty will move into to town hall; please look out for local signage.
