Mayor’s column – 15th January 2025

Practice Manager Felicity Newport with Andy Jones and author Lydia Hardy

I hope you all enjoyed the Christmas and New Year season. We were away with family, so sadly missed the fantastic atmosphere in Victoria Park on Christmas morning, but I believe several hundred people turned up to create a very special start to the day. That was then followed by The Frome Christmas Get Together, offering festive cheer, company and great food at three different venues to so many people who would otherwise find Christmas a difficult time. Huge thanks go to everyone who gave their time and energy to make both those events so successful.

Before I left for Christmas, it was a pleasure to join the team at Focus Frome for the launch of Lydia Hardy’s book ‘The Magician of Rook Lane’. Lydia Hardy is donating all proceeds from the book to support Focus Frome’s counselling services. Pick up a copy for £10 by emailing the Focus Frome team.

By the time you read this we’ll be halfway into January, and already the calendar is full of so many fabulous Frome events. The Cheese and Grain are hosting another of their popular clothes swaps on Saturday 18th January, so if you didn’t like some of the gifts that Santa brought there’s an opportunity to see them repurposed, and choose something for yourself at the same time.

The regular events at Frome Library have a short break over the holiday season, but they’re back with Baby Boogie on Tuesday mornings and Toddler Time on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Full details of these and many other things happening can be found on the Discover Frome website.

Incredibly we’re now less than six months away from Frome Festival which will happen between 4th to 13th July, so planning is already well under way for the annual round of events, concerts, Hidden Gardens and of course the ever-popular Food Feast. Look out soon for news of a revamped Friends of the Festival offering so you can make the best of what’s on offer.

Before then of course we have the Kindness Festival scheduled for 15th to 22nd March, so make sure you stay local for a week of events celebrating what’s special about Frome – and if you want to help make it another great success, get in touch with the team at The Good Heart.

The Mayoral calendar isn’t too full this month, but I’m looking forward to welcoming the new Vicar of St John’s at the beginning of February, and I’ve been invited to Frome College’s performance of Alice in Wonderland at the Merlin Theatre which promises to be a great evening’s entertainment.

Finally, if you work with a charity or community group and you have an idea for an event to add to Frome’s calendar, get in touch with the team at FTC to find out more about working together – we’re all ears! Email info@frometowncouncil.gov.uk or call 01373 465757.
