Frome’s new mayor Cllr Andy Jones set sail with the ‘Good Ship Helen’ on Thursday 23rd May at the opening of Frome’s newest play area, set among the trees at Welshmill Woods. 60 Year Two students from St John’s First School joined the mayor to cut the ribbon and test out the new play equipment, which includes a pirate ship, named ‘Helen’, a mud kitchen, seesaw, balance beams and seating. The play area was designed by pupils from St John’s First School.
Frome Town Council’s Wild About Trees Officer Helen Viner who worked with the children said: “It’s brilliant to see the play area complete. The kids worked really hard and were so enthusiastic about the project; now their ideas are a part of Frome and will be here for future generations. I hope they feel as proud of themselves as we are, and I hope they play here for years, maybe even bring their own children here, and always remember the amazing thing they’ve achieved. Thanks so much to Mrs Gilbert, Mrs Simenton and Miss Murtagh from St Johns, and all the support staff and parents who made the project possible.”
Mayor Andy Jones said “It was a pleasure and an honour to open the new play area at Welshmill, as one of my first official duties as Frome’s Mayor, and to watch the children get stuck in. Thanks to FTC’s amazing team of rangers for all their hard work, to St John’s and especially to the young people. It’s aptly named after our Wild About Trees Officer Helen, whose hard work was instrumental in making the children’s vision into reality; we think she was suitably surprised! We wish the Good Ship Helen safe travels and happy times!”
There’s another chance to work with Wild About Trees Officer Helen Viner during Great Big Green Week. Join Helen at Egford Park’s Tiny Forest on Tues 11th June from 4pm to 5pm, and use Citizen Science techniques to assess the soil health, tree growth and biodiversity of the space. No previous experience necessary; free and suitable for all ages.
