Mayor’s column – 4th June 2024

What a whirlwind introduction to my new life as Mayor! Part of the reason for taking on this position was the opportunity to find out more about our fabulous town and to experience things I’ve never done before. Like launching a pirate ship!

Some of our younger citizens from St John’s First School have been working with Helen Viner and the rangers from Frome Town Council to design and create an amazing new play area in Welshmill Woods, centred around ‘Helen’, a pirate ship. I had the honour of joining them for the launching ceremony and it was a real pleasure to see how young imaginations run free, given a little inspiration. Thanks to St John’s pupils, staff and parents as well as our hard-working rangers, Frome now has a new and inspiring play area.

An early (for me) start last Saturday for the Well Dressing at St John’s Church. A small procession to the Boyle Cross and down Cheap Street, where the leat was blessed, before a short ceremony at the well. Beautifully decorated by St John’s First School – they have been busy this month! Frome Town Band sounded lovely, and such a spectacle with sunshine reflecting from the polished brass.

One other big day for me was the opening of the Frome Festival box office. There are so many fabulous events lined up for July and the queue on the first day stretched outside the Cheese & Grain. You can download the Frome Festival programme guide here https://fromefestival.co.uk/frome-festival-2024-brochure/

By the time you read this I’ll have been in Victoria Park for the Carnival Funday, Dog Show & Royalty Selection, and opened the Frome Pride edition of the Frome Independent, but more on those next time. In the meantime, if there’s anything I, or my colleagues at FTC can help with, please get in touch at info@frometowncouncil.gov.uk or call 01373 465757.
