The theme of this week’s events seems to have been mostly about raising money. Last Wednesday I chaired the Frome Town Council (FTC) meeting which sets our annual budget. Residents have entrusted their council to be forward thinking and to build an inclusive, sustainable and successful town for the future. Of course, this costs money and it was great to see the ambitious but realistic work programme before agreeing our financial aims for 2020 – 2021. Full details are available on the FTC website – www.frometowncouncil.gov.uk/meeting/council-19/.
Less formal ways of raising money are the charitable events I attend. Last week I was delighted to attend the Frome Lions Club annual sporting dinner at Orchardleigh Estate, an event that always raises a large sum for charity. This year the funds are going to ‘Hope for Tomorrow’, an organisation that brings mobile cancer treatment units nearer to patients, rather than them having to travel miles from their homes at this most traumatic time in their lives.
Some of you will also know I host a quiz every month at The Three Swans. Our teams are very generous, and always make a donation to a local charity. I am being asked more frequently if I have selected a Mayor’s Charity for my year (which ends in May), not only in the pub but by many other people I meet. Until now I have not, but I am now looking for a cause I can support. I could give the funds to one of the established major charities in the town but would really like to help a less well-known or supported cause, where the donation could make a significant difference.
If you wish to bring such a cause to my notice, please contact me at info@frometowncouncil.gov.uk and I will let you know when I have chosen the beneficiary.
