The Great Big Green Week returns for a summer edition this June with over 40 events for all ages. Part of the nationwide event, Frome’s Great Big Green Week will run from Saturday 10th to Sunday 18th June and will provide an opportunity to explore and celebrate the town’s green spaces and highlight the action Frome is taking to tackle the climate emergency.
Family events include a River Festival at Rodden Meadow, a Planet-Friendly Picnic in Victoria Park and a welcome to the Seed Library Garden. Children will also be able to enjoy a Nature’s Rainbow Art Session, Tiny Forest Citizen Science Workshop and Plastic Fantastic craft session.
For food-lovers, Lo Rapitenc will be championing local produce with a Market Menu, there’ll be a chance to get hands on with an Elderflower Champagne Workshop and explore foraged, reclaimed and rediscovered ingredients at ‘This Food is Rubbish’. From the 12th -18th a selection of village pubs will also be taking part in Veggie Week where you’ll be able to find more vegetarian and vegan delights on their specials boards.
Councillor Fiona Barrows said: “Great Big Green Week celebrates the action we are taking as a community to tackle the climate and ecological emergency. With such a huge challenge facing us it can feel overwhelming and dispiriting, and as though what we can do as individuals won’t make any real difference.
However, working together as a community we really can create change, and help Frome become a more sustainable and resilient town. The week will be an opportunity to learn about the many incredible climate initiatives already happening in Frome, and how we can all get involved and play our part.”
If you’re looking for inspiration on how to play your part in the fight against climate change, there will be opportunities to visit a low carbon home, join the Big Green Summer Meet Up to find out what local groups have been up to, talk it out at the Climate Café and hear from a variety of speakers on the subject at the ‘How do we tackle the climate emergency’ event at Rode Memorial Hall.
For gardening fans there will be a chance to find out more and get involved with the Gardening Together initiative as well as taking part in a Nature Volunteer Day and a Garden Gather at Broadway Community Gardens.
There will also be plenty of opportunities to enjoy Frome’s green spaces with foraging and nature connection walks, an open day at Rodden Nature Reserve and Green Spaces Walk.
In addition to all the new events, some firm favourites from the last two years will also be returning, including the Frome Heritage Tree Walk, the Big Green Clothes Swap and pond dipping at Welshmill. Rodden Meadow will once again play host to a yoga session, the Frome Community Bike Project will be helping you get you back on two wheels and there will be another chance to watch two Frome chefs battle it out with the Community Fridge Ready Steady Cook!
