Mayor’s column 15 September 2022

Hello everyone, and welcome to this week’s update; I was saddened to hear of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and on behalf of Frome Town Council and the people of Frome, I offer my deepest condolences to the royal family. A book of condolence is available at the Town Hall for anyone wanting to reflect at this time.

As we roll gently into the Autumn, there’s still plenty going on, I was delighted to host a picnic in our beloved Rodden Meadow for our Ukrainian families staying in Frome. It was a perfect summers evening, and we had classic picnic food and games; it was a lot of fun, and I even got a chance to brush up my Frisbee skills. It was a great chance to get to know some of the people better. I managed to learn a few words in Ukrainian but was amazed at how brilliant everyone’s English is! It was obviously extremely sad to hear some of the stories, but the event was a very warm and positive experience and lovely to hear, despite everything, how much people are enjoying Frome and its hospitality.

I was of course really pleased to be invited to the Frome in Bloom awards held at Selwood Academy. As a gardener, it’s wonderful to get to see so many gardens, and there really were some fantastic entries; there are some real oases of wildlife around town and it’s a joy to see. Special kudos to our Town Rangers, who took the Gold Trophy for Best Business Area for the town centre. They’ve done a brilliant job of keeping it blooming despite the extended hot and dry weather so it’s great that they have got some recognition for that.

As you read this, we’re mid-way through the important Great Big Green Week. This is a national event, and a great platform to celebrate our green spaces and highlight the action our town is taking to tackle climate change.

Some of the most popular events from last year returned including the Heritage Tree Walk, led by our own Tree Guru Julian Hight, plus a Bat Walk as well as a whole host of new activities and events. It’s guaranteed that there will be something for people of all ages so try and squeeze an event in before the week ends. Do check out the details on our website; many events are free, but you may need to book a slot in advance as some of them tend to be very popular! https://bit.ly/GBGW2022

Meanwhile, take care of each other and don’t hesitate to get in touch with me or my colleagues at the Council if we can help with anything.
