Plans for Frome’s new orchard are underway with the first draft being revealed by the Mayor at the Children’s Festival.
The orchard was chosen by the town in the People’s Budget vote earlier this year and Frome Town Council are now encouraging residents to take a look at the plans, get in touch and share their thoughts.
The proposal is on show at the Town Hall for the public to offer their comments about what they think will work well, what they aren’t so keen on and anything they would like to see included.
The Mayor, Richard Ackroyd said, “We have a plan with what we think Frome might want but we want to hear from you. Let us know what sort of trees and fruit you want there or if you’d like areas for children to play for example. We’d also like to hear your name suggestions!”
The orchard will be sited on the Showfield to the left of the play equipment as you look up the hill towards Selwood School and will be planted on Apple Day, 21st October.
The initial plan includes the usual fruit such as apples, pears and plums, but also herbs and an olive grove, wild flower planting to attract insects, bee and bug houses, bird feeders and hedgehog houses and welcoming areas for people to meet and chat.
Feedback so far has been positive with many people excited about having a community orchard on their doorstep. The Council will continue to talk to residents and gather as much feedback as possible with an online consultation opening shortly.
