Over the last week and up to the Christmas Lights Switch On on 1st December I’m joining both kids and grown-ups making lanterns at the free workshops being held at the Welshmill Hub on Park Hill Road. Mel and Alice are there to help you make a simple pyramid shape or go wild with your imagination… there is a snake lantern and one in the shape of a reindeer! Check on the Discover Frome website to see details of the workshops and remember to bring your lantern to join the processions on the night of the Switch On.
Next week is National Tree week and this month is the 800th anniversary of the Charter of the Forest. Frome Town Council is a member of this Charter. We joined because we have a commitment to the green spaces in our town and value the wonderful trees that contribute to the health and wellbeing of the town. Not only do they improve air quality but they are beautiful and become a striking part of our skyline.
At the beginning of the month we found out that Frome’s favourite tree is that magnificent cedar tree on Bath Street but there are lots of wonderful mature trees across town. However, it is true that many trees these days are being cut down for housing development or just because they have got too big. So it is important to replace them in better locations. This Sunday the Frome Town Council Rangers, who look after our open spaces, need your help to plant a hedge on the Old Showground. The hedge will shelter the playground there and improve the ecology providing homes for a greater range of wildlife.
Frome used to be surrounded by the huge Selwood forest. The name possibly comes from Sallow wood and the Sallow is a willow tree.
