The community car scheme is one year old this week. The scheme was set up with the help and support of Frome Town Council and started operating in December 2016 by carrying out 6 jobs in the month. Currently they are carrying out an average of 170 and confirmed by the manager in charge of transport at County Hall, it is now the second largest such group in Somerset.
All of the group have offered to use their own cars to pick up passengers in the BA11 area and take them to places such as medical appointments, chemist, social activity groups, mainly in the Frome area. The drivers do not get paid, but are able to claim for fuel if they want to, and they simply enjoy helping others.
It is not a Taxi service, it is aimed at those who for a variety of reasons are unable to use public transport, and it might be that it is too far to the bus stop, or the taxi driver cannot help the person to the car or to the place they are going to? We also offer a wheelchair adapted car, but this is available on a limited basis so early booking is essential.
All passengers and carers if they need one must live in the BA11 postcode area. They will be required to pre-register with the scheme and sign an agreement that they understand how the system works; there is no charge to register. Registering also includes them in a public liability insurance we paid for by means of being a part of Mid Somerset Car Scheme Partnership. However there is a very reasonable charge for journeys which it is based on zones; however holders of a bus pass will only pay 50% up to a maximum of £5.
As well as a tremendous positive feedback form the passengers the driver feedback is also brilliant, some are finding a new lease of life as it get them out and meeting people again.
